Two at the Dog Beach

At the evening beach

(formerly known as the dog beach)

two black-suited snorkelers thrash about

in the dog pool

before finning off into deeper water

No dogs are in the pool today

although two frolic in the shallows

leap from rock to rock

It’s as if someone changed the rules

(there never were signs)

Two children and their dad

scan the rock pools

squealing as they search

for crabs

they are too scared to pick up

Two people sit and watch the sun set

as their old dog sniffs at seaweed and pauses

as if remembering

the dog pool of other years

and how she wild she used to be
